Trichotillomania. Of Greek origin: trich (hair) + tillein (to pull) + and maniaor (frenzy; morbid desire). Put it all together and you get the compulsive urge to pull one’s hair out.

It’s estimated the 1% - 5% of the world’s population suffers from “trich,” and approximately 2/3s of those who suffer are women. Trichotillomania is classified as an impulse control disorder and may be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both medication as well as therapy have been successful in controlling the disorder.
