Sulfasalazine May Counter Alopecia
Research led by Dr. Charles N. Ellis of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and recently published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, indicates that the anti-inflammatory drug, sulfasalazine, may counter the effects of alopecia areata.
Sulfasalazine has been available for years, and is commonly used to treat theumatoid arthritis in Europe and the US. Is is also prescribed to treat psoriasis.
“When it works, it works great,” said Dr. John J. Voorhees, study author. “In at least one half of people it doesn’t work at all.”
So, this probably isn’t a panacea, but rather a potential bonus side-effect.
