Staying Bald Just Might Save Lives
From The Pitt News, comes a rather scathing take on the growing market for lifestyle drugs, such as those that regrow hair. From the opinion piece:
Doctors must take the Hippocratic oath before they can practice. This oath states that as a doctor, one will do no harm. But when doctors and researchers believe that there is no incentive for them to create a vaccine for a worldwide pandemic, when 80 percent of funding goes toward drugs that simply treat Americans cosmetically, and when curing entire populations is put on hold to research [cures for erectile dysfunction], doctors do the greatest harm of all. I’ve already stated my postion on baldness: Most of us just need to accept it and move on with life. Same goes for most who are targeted by other cosmetic and lifestyle drugs. There are exceptions, but not nearly enough to justify the money spent. Capitalism is wonderfully efficient in how it allocates resources. But it is woefully inadequate as a mechanism to make moral choices.

A cure for baldness would not make impossible a cure for other diseases. In fact, a cure for bald may actually help the research for other cures.
