Shaving Your Head: Be Cool… Be Smart
Philly Burbs has a nice piece with several tips on caring for your bald head. Whether you’re bald by choice or bald by design, these are all good reminders. Skin cancer is among the fastest growing forms of cancer in the United States with an estimated 1 million new cases every year. Besides, bald is rarely cool… when your dead.
Here are their tips, which coincide nicely with my list of Bald Man Essentials.
- Avoid midday sun, when ultraviolet radiation is strongest.
- Check your scalp monthly for new growths or new or changing moles or lesions. Ask a friend or hairdresser to check places you can’t see.
- Follow the ABCD rule of pigmented lesions: “A” is asymmetry; “B” is an irregular border; “C” is color variations; and “D” is a diameter larger than a pencil eraser.
- See a doctor for any suspicious growths, including ones that are growing fast, moles with many colors, bleeding moles or ones that are easily irritated. These changes can be harder to spot in darker skin.
- If you have lost all or most of your hair, reduce your risk of scalp cancer by wearing a hat outdoors, and applying at least an SPF 15 sunscreen containing zinc oxide or titanium to your scalp. These types of sunscreens won’t run into your eyes.

I lived during the Long Hair is cool generation. Over the years, I’ve had some hair loss, and I thought It looked stupid having hair below your shoulders when its thin on tip. It’s like I am being in denial :) Plus, I work out doors, and shor hair is cooler, AND “COOLER” looking IMHO.
So I took my bead drimmer and just went for it so that my hair is VERY short. I love it. I think it looks better. Its easier to maintain and my wife loves it too :) I have an appointment to have it cut tomorrow. Last time my sweet hair lady cut it a bit to long so tomorrow I am going to tell her to just shave it till its just a18th of an inch. I love it short. The only way to go. For what ever reason people decide to go with short hair or bald, its great. The only way to go. More power to those that choose the “cool head”
Just my opinion
Thanks for this opertunity to epress myself.
Jon Clay.
