Pantene Beautiful Lengths

by Bald Man on February 23rd, 2007

Pantene Beautiful LengthsThe inimitable Hsien-Hsien Lei tipped me off to this one. Seems the big boys are reaching out to the wig-wearing as well as the home-town salon. (I know that’s a sexist expression and that Pantene is really more of a woman’s brand, but “big girls” just doesn’t convey the same means. Plus it’s more likely to get me slapped for no good reason.)

I’ve seen several stories lately - two of which I highlighted in early January - about local salons who are catering to a wig wearing clientèle by sharpening their wig styling skills. In addition I’ve covered a number of stories on donations to Locks of Love, all of which occur with the participation and assistance of local salons and stylists.

Well, Pantene, a Procter and Gamble brand, is looking to do something for those who have lost their hair as a result of cancer treatment.

Hair loss can strike an especially crippling blow to women fighting cancer. In fact, a recent study revealed that 58% of women consider hair loss to be the most dreaded side effect they face when undergoing chemotherapy.

To help women during one of the greatest fights of their lives, Pantene has partnered with the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) to launch Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a campaign that encourages people to grow, cut and donate their hair to create real-hair wigs for women who’ve lost their hair due to cancer. Hair donations are made into wigs that get distributed through American Cancer Society wig banks. (Women facing cancer can find out about the availability of wig by calling the American Cancer Society at 1-877-227-1596.)

Now, I am unashamedly cynical when most large corporations are involved, and you don’t get much bigger than P&G. But this seems like a good thing… regardless of motivation… and the world needs more kindness.
