New Cancer Drug Cocktail May Treat Multiple Myeloma Without Treatment Related Hair Loss

by Bald Man on December 30th, 2006

After a month of mostly lifestyle-type posts, I suppose I should interject a bit of science and health into Baldiness, being a part of the Science and Health Channel and all. So, here’s news of a potential multiple myeloma treatment in Phase I clinical trial. The treatment is an oral cocktail of KRX-0401 (perifosine), Revlimid (lenalidomide) and dexamethasone. “[We] believe that this novel oral combination may represent an important new option for multiple myeloma patients,” said Kathy Giusti, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium (MMRC), who are backing the trial along with Keryx Biopharmaceuticals.

Multiple myeloma is an incurable blood cancer, and Revlimid and dexamethasone are presently used to treat the disease. Researchers hope the new ingredient, KRX-0401, will boost the efficacy of treatment. Furthermore, in other early studies use of KRX-0401 resulted in neither a depressed immune system nor hair loss like many other cancer treatments.
