Baldiness

NBC’s Today Show Talks Health Hair

by Bald Man on January 28th, 2007

Tangerine by Darwin BellThursday, it seems hair loss - well, mostly hair maintenance - made the cut on NBC’s Today Show. Nutritionist Joy Bauer was on to chat with Meredith Vieira. Here’s the bit most relevant to the bald:

Diet didn’t cause hair loss, couldn’t prevent hair loss, and can’t reverse hair loss.

That’s the bottom line when it comes to diet. If your hair loss is genetic or age-related, loading up on iron rich foods, vitamins B and C, and zinc won’t help. It might help what hair you have shine and bounce like a Pantene commercial; but it won’t do a thing about hair loss.

1 opinion for NBC’s Today Show Talks Health Hair

I have had alopecia since I was 11 or 12 years old. Every time we went to see a doctor, I was always told to “relax”, “do yoga”, “eat healthier” etc. etc. etc. I would do everything they said to do, and it frustrated me to no end when nothing helped. Five years ago, when I finally lost every hair on my body, including eyebrows and eyelashes, my doctor was still telling me to load up on zinc and vitamins etc., PLUS she put me on a course of steroids for a year and a half. All that did for me was make me gain 80 lbs. My eyebrows and eyelashes (and about six pubes– sorry, had to) have since come back, and I don’t really care all that much that I’m bald anymore (all my students know I’m wearing a wig, and my husband met and fell in love with me when I was bald, so big whoop) and I am so relieved that I’m (hopefully) not going to be told again that something *I* am doing (or not doing as the case may be) is the cause of my hair loss.
