March Is Scams Awareness Month
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT), a bureau of the British government, is running “Scams Awareness Month” during March. And that unfortunately has more than a bit of relevance for Bald Men.
Unscrupulous people are keen to play on insecurities in an effort to separate you from your hard earned cash. One of the first posts I wrote here at Baldiness was about Glenn Braswell, a man convicted for marketing phony baldness treatments. (Mr. Braswell has since died.) Mike Haley, Head of OFT Scambusters Team said:
“Scammers exploit people’s desperate hopes for a miracle cure to their health problem. Not only are the products a waste of money but they can be dangerous, containing untested ingredients. We urge everyone who sees a miracle health advert to stop, think and think again. Take medical advice from your doctor or pharmacist before you buy any medicinal product by mail order or over the web.” (link)
Now if you’ve followed along at Baldiness for any length of time, you’ll know my first piece of advice regarding hair loss is to accept it and get on with living your life. Unless you have aspirations to become a professional wig donor, baldness doesn’t really close many doors.
But I can accept that some absolutely want to fight their hair loss. No problem; after all, you’re the one who has to live your life. So, if you are looking into treatments, head the OFT Scambusters tips:
- Don’t believe claims that a product available only by mail order or over the web from an exclusive supplier contains a ’special’, ’secret’, ‘foreign’ or ‘ancient’ formula that will provide instant cures to a wide variety of ailments.
- Don’t believe claims that the medical establishment has overlooked, or has hidden, a ’scientific breakthrough’.
- Don’t accept testimonials or case histories from so-called ’satisfied customers’ as the only evidence that the product actually works.
