HAIR Helps Women with Alopecia
No, I’m not being obtuse, just a bit cheeky, I suppose. HAIR in this instance is an acronym: Help with Adjustment for Alopecia and Image Recovery, an unwieldy name that undoubtedly has its genesis in the US Congress for a computer imaging system developed at the University of Virginia Cancer Center.
“Between 47 and 58 percent of women who have chemo therapy and lose their hair, report the hair loss as very distressing and traumatic,” said UVa professor Dr. Elizabeth McGarvey. “The idea is to make it available to cancer centers all over the country and it would be a standard part of care dealing with the image recovery and helping women to have quality of life.”
Unfortunately neither the UVa main website nor the UVa Cancer Center website have anything on the HAIR system.
