Genetics & Health Honor Roll [UPDATED]
[UPDATED] Such is the downfall of cutting-and-pasting! My answer to question #1 is edited to reflect Baldiness.com, NOT Genetics and Health. (Hsien has successfully thwarted my coup. ;) )
OK, while Baldiness.com isn’t your standard Science & Health blog (After all, “truthiness” is in the tag-line), I am an adopted child of the channel. Furthermore, I do manage to squeeze an occasional report on actual science and health news in between the Gail Porter gossip and Amazing Race coverage.
Well, all humor aside, you should be able to trust the science news you find here. I want you to have a measure of confidence in Baldiness. So, toward that end, I’m answering The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, 10 Things To Know about Evaluating Medical Resources on the Web.
10 Things To Know about Evaluating Medical Resources on the Web
1. Who runs this site?
Genetics and Health Baldiness.com is part of the b5media blog network. My name is Cory Aldrich, and I post under the nickname “Bald Man” on this site. I can be found using on the web using my real name and my nickname. I have a BS in Business Administration. I have no advanced medical training, nor do I work in a medical field.
2. Who pays for the site?
Baldiness.com generates revenue thru advertising and other affiliate programs. All advertisement are labeled as such.
3. What is the purpose of the site?
Baldiness.com is a broad spectrum exploration of baldness. Everything from medical and scientific news to pop culture and media are covered. While conveying information, I also hope to inject a sense of humor and perspective into a topic both taken all too seriously by some and at the same time ignored.
4. Where does the information come from?
Most of the news is found on Google news. In addition, I keep tabs on television media. Inspiration is also taken from other websites I wander into. Finally, as a bald man, my own life provides a constant source of material.
5. What is the basis of the information?
The original source is always cited in a post. When a story has been picked up my multiple news outlets, I try to cite the first one on which I saw the story.
6. How is the information selected?
I am the writer and editor for Baldiness.com. I post at my own discretion. Since this is a blog and interaction with readers is possible (and encouraged!) there is a built-in forum for correction, follow-up, and disagreement. If a post is edited for anything more significant than to correct spelling or grammar, the original text is left but marked out (like this) New text is inserted immediately after the marked out original, or in a new paragraph. An [UPDATED] label is usually put in front of the inserted paragraph and in the post title.
7. How current is the information?
As a blog, posts are stored in reverse chronological order. (most recent first) News appears within a few days from when I first read it. When I am able older posts are corrected (See Question #6) or linked to from within the new post.
8. How does the site choose links to other sites?
Links within posts are selected at my discretion. Links in the advertisements are automatically generated by the sponsoring program, e.g. Google.
9. What information about you (the reader) does the site collect, and why?
Common data on site traffic, including visitor IP addresses, are logged for site development and promotion.
In order to leave a comment, visitors must enter an email address. This information is never sold or distributed to other parties. A more complete Privacy Statement for b5media is being developed.
10. How does the site manage interactions with visitors?
Visitors are encouraged to leave comments, which are appended to the end of the relevent post. I reserve the right to moderate, edit, or delete any comment, though will only do so if the comment is “spam” or offensive. (Disagreeing with me is not considered offensive.) In addition I can be contacted directly via email (cory@b5media.com). Comments sent via email may be incorporated into Baldiness.com, but I will generally try to get your permission before doing so or make an anonymous reference.
Over at Genetics & Health Hsien maintains an “Honor Roll” of sites that have answered these questions. Look for Baldiness.com to be added there. In addition, use the “Honor Roll” as a resource when looking for or evaluating other health sites you find on the web.
