Focus on Self-Confidence for Those Losing Hair
I came across a trio of articles that seem interesting.
- The first, from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, is a profile of Darlene Usadel, a hair dresser who has a growing clientèle of wig wearers. Ms. Usadel began dressing wigs ten years ago when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Since then, she has found not only a new business niche, but a way to give encouragement and hope to those experiencing alopecia, both chemotherapy-induced and not.
- The second article, profiles Scottish salon Angel Hair Designs, who is doing much the same thing on the other side of the pond. Says stylist Lesley Docherty, “It is hard to imagine what you would do if you woke up one morning and found your hair was falling out. It is difficult enough dealing with a severe illness but then to lose your hair which is the first thing people notice. One of my clients, whose son isn’t aware that his mother is fighting cancer, was so troubled by the hair loss she was contemplating stopping her treatment. She didn’t want her son to know she was ill.“
- Finally, we return to the US Midwest, where we meet medical tattoo artist Jaudon Sunde, who is specializing in “micropigmentation“. Ms. Sunde uses digital equipment to augment the failing eyebrows and eyelashes of chemotherapy-patients. “I give them their normalcy back to make them feel more secure about facing the world,” Jaudon said.
While well-styled wigs and eyelash tattoos might seem rather trivial at first blush, we must take a moment to look deeper. Realizing that hair loss may be justification for someone to cease chemotherapy, attention to these sorts of personal details are most valuable indeed. Is it vanity? Perhaps; but if a little attention to vanity gives someone the boost they need to continue the fight of their life, then I say pamper away!

[…] Earlier this month I did a little speed linking about a growing awareness in the cosmetic/beauty industry for options that support the fragile self-confidence of some who have lost their hair. I linked to a trio of articles, one of which introduced Jaudon Sunde, a medical tattoo artist who works with chemotherapy patients to augment thinning eyebrows and eyelashes. Fast forward to today and a story from icWales. […]

[…] I’ve seen several stories lately - two of which I highlighted in early January - about local salons who are catering to a wig wearing clientèle by sharpening their wig styling skills. In addition I’ve covered a number of stories on donations to Locks of Love, all of which occur with the participation and assistance of local salons and stylists. […]
