Diagnostic Criteria Narrowed for Melanoma

by Bald Man on August 3rd, 2006

MedPageToday recently had an article of interest. Recent research has provided doctors with an improved method for differentiating between skin cancer and good old-fashioned sun-damaged skin. The article is fairly technical, but it seems to boil down to this: Melanoma and sun-damaged skin have many characteristics in common. As a result, physicians, erring on the side of caution, tended to over-diagnose melanoma and remove more skin than necessary when performing surgery. The new research is providing doctors with more refined criteria. This should result is better diagnoses, safer surgeries and less frequent surgeries.

So, if you’ve been putting off a trip to have that thing on your head checked out, you’ve now got one less excuse.
