Here’s an interesting looking book: Medicalized Masculinities, edited by Dana Rosenfeld and Christopher Faircloth. From the Book Description out at Amazon.com:
When medicalization—the characterization of human traits in terms of disease and ailment—first appeared as a concept in the 1970s, most social science gender scholarship focused on female or genderless bodies. The work on men, health, […]

I had wondered myself; now I wonder no more.
Q: Dr. Bernstein, why have you not had a hair Transplant? I’m sure this question gets asked a lot. Thanks.
A: Yes, all the time. My donor area is very thin (so I am not a good candidate) and I have gotten used to being bald. It has […]

Here’s a nice YouTube video on Advanced Hair Studio, which has come under fire of late for it’s misleading advertising claims. The clip - about 10 minutes long - if from a BBC program (or should I say “programme?”) and takes the form of investigative, hidden-camera journalism .

While I dug out from a crazy week of late nights and travel at the day job last week, some of the top brains in the hair biz were in Vancouver at the Fifth International Congress on Hair Research. Baldness isn’t the only topic on the agenda; they’ll be covering everything hair related. Too much… […]

I came across two articles today that provide growing hope for cancer treatments that produce fewer side effects such as alopecia. Both stories come out of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting which is presently being held in Chicago.
Story number one has bearing on metastatic colorectal cancer. Data was presented today on […]

A couple month’s back Dr. Bauman left a lengthy comment, and I promised I’d respond. A combination of circumstances beyond the blogging world and the desire to weigh my words carefully have combined to delay this open letter far beyond what I had hoped. Regardless, I hope it adds something to the conversation.
Here is my […]

Say that five times fast!
(Before we go any further the answer is, “Yes, I will delete any comments consisting of ‘that that that that that.’”)
Trichotillomania. Of Greek origin: trich (hair) + tillein (to pull) + and maniaor (frenzy; morbid desire). Put it all together and you get the compulsive urge to pull one’s hair […]

Here’s an overview of the treatment options for hair loss presented with flair by Cecil Adams. All you need to see to know he’s got a sense of humor is a summary list of the four available treatments:
Castration.
Minoxidil.
Finasteride.
Hair transplants, etc.
Anyone who even puts castration in the list of potential remedies has… well… balls. :)

I normally comb through Dr. Rassman’s Q & As from Balding Blog on a semi-weekly basis, compiling a few that catch my eye into a semi-themed post. This question however, strikes me as worth standing on it’s own. It’s not something I’ve ever looked at here at Baldiness, but it’s got my curiosity up.
Pursuing a […]

Here at Science Museum are some quotes and facts on the recent developments in hair regeneration…. and more importantly some pretty cool photos. About half way down the page is one showing the stem cells, dyed blue, that are actually responsible for the hair regeneration.
