Braiding May Lead to Hair Loss

by Bald Man on May 21st, 2006

Summer’s coming, and that means beach vacations. Be careful, ladies! (And men, now that braided styles are becoming more common.) Those cane rows might be just the island style for which you’ve been looking, but they might also cause you to lose your hair. From The Jamaica Observer.

Living in a culture eternally obsessed with braids, extensions and ‘catching up the hair’ so tightly that the temples bulge, we are sometimes not aware that there are consequences, until our hair starts protesting.

Repetitive use of these procedures, unbeknownst to many Jamaican women, can lead to traction alopecia, a form of hair loss caused by excessive tension being exerted on the hair shaft.

Now you’re probably okay if you’re getting braids on a vacation-whim. But if your everyday style involves a lot of tension on your hair, consider giving your locks a break every now and then. A few “bad hair days” are probably preferable to many “no hair days.”
