Baldness Doesn’t Slow Dylan Down!
A comment today from baldgirly, who lost her hair as a twelve year old, makes this this story from the Yakima (WA) Herald Republic all the more appropriate. Meet Dylan Ball, a sixth grader and freestyle skier who has lost all of his body hair due to alopecia areata. From the article:
Having no hair is not a characteristic for which Dylan wants to be noticed. Like most 12-year-olds, he doesn’t mind attention. But he’d rather be recognized for his personality — “I’m a caring guy” — and his skills.
Specifically, his command of freestyle skiing.

“It’s still hard,” Dylan says. “I wonder how it would feel to have hair again. I want to remember what it’s like to get in the shower and get your hair wet.”
“I want to have hair, and I don’t want to have hair. It might fall out again, and that would depress me.”
Besides, “It’s not what’s on the outside; it’s what’s on the inside,” Dylan says. “When I look at myself in the mirror, I see no eyelashes, no eyebrows, no hair, and I say, ‘Dylan, that’s you.’”(link)
Well said, Dylan!
