One of the best things that I have ever heard of being done in a concert, is when BNL (aka the barenaked ladies) performed “Bald Men on Parade”, and introduced all of the baldies on their crew. This happened at last year’s concert in Vancouver. I really wish I had been there. Maybe when they come back to town, I will get to go - and meet some of these great bald men.
How fun would it be, to see a parade of bald men. Now I have a new fantasy.
You can see the youtube video here. But be warned, the video is shaky - the person who took it, was too busy dancing - too keep the camera straight. Can’t really blame them. At the very least, you will be able to hear their great tribute to the baldies on their staff.
I am guessing that you have heard a bald person say this at least once, “lack of hair, can only mean that the brain is busy with more important functions”. In my opinion this means that bald people are smarter than people who have a full head of hair.
I have decided to prove this statement. I am a woman, who isn’t technically completely bald - but has enough hair issues to be considered at least semi bald, part time. Semi bald is still bald in my book…..
So go ahead, ask a question - and I will give you an answer. Any question at all…..I can come up with some reasonable answer for it. And I will try not to use google.
It has come to my attention, that baldies discriminate against other bald people. I am not sure why this is, since we are all in the same boat. Some may have more hair than others…but sooner or later, we are all going to end up with very little or no hair upon our heads.
I have decided to put up a new poll, which can be found on the sideboard. Please voice your opinion on the discriminatory issue. If you need more room, to voice your opinion - please leave a comment in this post.
Did you know that for every hair transplant being performed in the United States, there are 5 breast augmentation surgeries being performed.
Now I know a lot of men, from all walks of life. White collar professionals, blue collar workers, students, bald headed, hairy…you name a group, and I know someone in it. I asked all of the men that I know, if they would encourage their wife or girlfriend to have breast augmentation surgery…..75% of the men asked, said no - not even if it would make their partner feel better about herself. When I asked them the same question, but inserted the word “mother” or “sister” for “wife or girlfriend”, that number went up to about 90%.
I know of one woman who has had this surgery done, and she did it so she could feel younger - and so that men would be more interested in her. I think perhaps she should meet some of the men I know. None of them would be interested in that scene.
So now I ask you this question. If women are having breast augmentation surgeries because they think this is what will attract men….why are men having hair transplants (although at a much less frequent rate). Is it because they think that women wouldn’t be attracted to a bald man?
If that is actually the case, then maybe these men, should spend a lot more time reading this blog.
If you asked your “average” CEO of a Fortune 500 company, if he/she would rather be short or bald. The majority of the answers would be “I would rather grow a few inches” (they are not talking hair length). There you have it. Its is that simple. Baldness brings something to the boardroom table. Baldness brings trust to certain situations. Would you trust a business man, who was covering up his head with a bad toupee?
I understand that looks are important in the business world. If you want to succeed, then you need to look the part. OK, so look the part. Wear the Hugo Boss suit, and the right shoes - own a closet full of designer ties. But leave the rugs alone. A great suit can give the air of professionalism. Bad hair does not.
A clean shaven head gives off the impression of honesty. Who wants to deal with someone who thinks he can pull a fast one over you, by masking his baldness with a really bad hairpiece. Think of all the high profile businessmen you know. I bet you can name at least one that has really bad hair (and most likely fake hair at that)…. would you want to deal with him? I am guessing no.
Now here is a list of reputable bald (high profile) CEOs, how many on this list- would you want to deal with.
Murray Martin (CEO of Pitney Bowes)
Steve Carley (CEO of El Pollo Loco)
David O’ Reilly (Chevron)
Francis Blake (Home Depot)
John Mack (Morgan Stanley)
Lloyd Blankfein (Goldman Sachs)
Steve Ballmer (Mircrosoft)
George Jones (Borders)
Bob Kodner (The Crack Team)
Craig Newmark (The founder of Craigslist)
I am guessing that you are already dealing with these companies, on a slightly lower level than working with the CEO directly. However, all of those men are in some varying stage of baldness. What does baldness give them -that say eludes Donald Trump - well… they are approachable, and emit airs of honesty and humor. When pressed to address his baldness, Craig Newmark remarked:
The general Net community does regard me as eye candy, a la George Costanza” from Seinfeld.
Earlier this week, I was interviewed for an article about baldness. My interview specifically dealt with baldness in the workplace. I think you all know how I feel about baldness. I think its fabulous! But not everyone feels the same way. For an interesting take on the baldness debate, you should read the article over on Mainstreet, by Juliana Bunim.
She tells a very interesting story about Pierre the Penguin, who was bald, but is now growing some feathers back. There is loads of good information in it. And we love any article that quotes me!
I am always on the lookout for people doing fun or interesting things with their baldness. Today, I think I found a most unique individual both dealing with and celebrating her baldness. Let me introduce Anne Vanderlaan. This is a woman who gives new meaning to the words, art therapy. In case you are wondering, she paints landscape pictures with her head. It really is something to see.
The video runs a little long at almost 10 minutes, but when you see what she accomplishes at the end, your jaw will drop to the floor.
Anne, I have nominated you as my pick for the Bald (Wo)Man of the Week. Congratulations. You blew me away!
OK people! A new poll is up. This weeks topic is vulnerability. Considering all the talk about baldness in the workplace - and people complaining about lack of fairness. I thought it was high time to ask the question, where do you feel most vulnerable. If you want to elaborate - please do by using the comment section, at the bottom of this post.
And so here is this weeks poll.
Where does your baldness make you feel most vulnerable?
